/ Jean-Michel Blais
Festival International de Jazz de Montréal
Thanks to a canny blend of classical savoir-faire, precise pop sensibility and synthetic accompaniment, Jean-Michel Blais creates a unique musical environment where the intimacy of the piano can be gently upended at any given moment. Blais’ debut album, II, released April 8, 2016, has earned 50 million streams worldwide and reached the #1 spot on the Canadian Billboard classical music chart an incredible 14 times. It was also nominated in a number of categories for the Polaris Music Prize, and ranked among the Top 10 albums of 2016 by Time Magazine. The following year, Blais performed at the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy in collaboration with renowned producer CFCF. That event marked the beginning of a partnership between the two musicians, resulting in Cascades, a collaborative EP released March 15, 2017 and hailed by critics for its daring fusion of piano and electronica.
After a year-long tour of North America and Europe, Blais composed his second album, Dans ma main, released May 11, 2018, a collection of post-classical piano tinged with electronica. The album unfurls the harmony and tension of a double-helix of acoustic and electronic arpeggiation, techno, industrial music, ambient and new age, all bound together by Blais’ dazzling solo piano.
